“I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.”
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb….
As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.
Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives

Activity 1:
Juliet uses the pseudonym Izzy Bickerstaff when she writes her book Izzy Bickerstaff goes to War. Many people use pseudonyms to keep their identity a secret, because they don’t like their name, or for various other reasons. Please complete this worksheet that has some famous people that you may know, but don’t know their real name. You will probably know why they changed their names after you have completed the activity.

Activity 2:
Guernsey is an actual island off of the coast of England and part of the Chanel Islands. Watch the video below and use the information to create a travel guide for Guernsey. There are wonderful pictures as well as a lot of historical information in the video. Your guide should be an 8 ½ x 11-inch piece of paper folded into thirds with something different on each of the parts of the paper. If you need more information, please feel free to look up Guernsey on the internet. |

Activity 3:
Calling all Netflix watchers!! The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a movie that you can watch on Netflix. You would have no idea from the movie that the book is written all as letters. There are many differences between the book and the movie. You need to find at least FIVE differences and explain to me how/why they are different. I know you will find that the book is a lot better and gives you more information, but I still don’t think you’ll have any problem finding five differences.
