Critically acclaimed author Kimberley Griffiths Little spins a thrilling story of one girl's race to unravel the curse that has haunted her family for generations.
When Larissa Renaud starts receiving eerie phone calls on a disconnected old phone in her family's antique shop, she knows she's in for a strange summer. A series of clues leads her to the muddy river banks, where clouds of fireflies dance among the cypress knees and cattails each evening at twilight. The fireflies are beautiful and mysterious, and they take her on a magical journey through time, where Larissa learns secrets about her family's tragic past -- deadly, curse-ridden secrets that could harm the future of her family as she knows it. It soon becomes clear that it is up to Larissa to prevent history from repeating itself and a fatal tragedy from striking the people she loves.

Activities
Activity 1 - Fireflies
Have you ever been out in the country at sunset? If so, you may have seen some mysterious flashing lights in the bushes and trees, and if you were brave enough to investigate these mystery lights, you would have discovered they were insects! Fireflies to be exact. Do some research to find out: 1) Why do fireflies light up? Support your findings with three different pieces of evidence that support your claim. You may create a poster, writing sheet, or video to present your findings to me.
Activity 2 - Geneology
Larissa witnesses and learns about her family’s history going back several generations. Research the genealogy of your family and fill out a pedigree chart for 4 generations. (Go to http://www.genealogysearch.org/free/forms.html for a blank pedigree chart.) Pick one ancestor on your chart to research. Write down some of their history, then share it with Mrs. Jack.
Activity 3 - Bayou Bridge
Bayou Bridge is not a town in Louisiana, but it is a pipeline that was completed in 2019. Just like the Keystone Pipeline that may go through Nebraska, there were people who thought it was a great idea, and people who thought it was really bad. It is about 163 miles long and goes from Lake Charles, Louisiana to St. James, Louisiana. Just like the pipeline in Nebraska, you can either think it is a good or bad thing. I want you to find SEVEN things out about the pipeline. They can be on either side of the situation, or on both. Make a poster/chart that shares these things with me. You can draw it, or you can use the computer. One idea might be to start with a circle in the middle of the page that states the name of the pipeline, then draw out 7 circles telling me your facts. You might start out thinking it is a good idea, then finish changing your mind. There is a lot of money involved, both in constructing it and the money that will be paid and was raised for the state of Louisiana as well. Our world is a changing, isn't it!!
